22 April 2001 - Suffolk v Cambridgeshire

<top>

The second match of the season was going to be another tough draw for Suffolk, playing against Cambridgeshire whose A team had won the Region 4 title by a clear margin last year and the B team who were currently top of the rankings this year.

MEN’S A

Suffolk A team got off to a good start taking the first three frames.  After that, frames went fairly evenly. Suffolk finally took the first session 7-4.  Suffolk clearly meant business and went on to take the second session 7-4, the third session 8-3 and the final session 7-4. A great team performance leading to a 29-15 win for Suffolk.  Special mention to Steve Lish, Alan Mower and Paul Keeble who won all four of their games.

MEN’S B

After last month’s win against Norfolk, Suffolk B team really needed to beat Cambridgeshire to hopefully go top of the Region 4 B team rankings.  Suffolk were off to a bad start losing the first two frames but then took the next four to lead Cambridgeshire by two frames.  Wins then alternated and Suffolk finally won the first session 6-5.  The second session was fairly even, again Suffolk managed to clinch it 6-5 to go 12-10 ahead.  Suffolk then stepped up a gear, took the third and fourth sessions 7-4 bringing the final score to 26-18.  Excellent performances by Gary Flatt and Phil Cullingford each winning 4 out of 4; new players this year, Lee Cubitt and Rob Smith each won 3 out of 4 and Darren Belton won 2 out of 2 after coming in as a substitute in the third session to play his first game for Suffolk.

LADIES

The Suffolk Ladies also started the game badly with a two frame loss but took the next two to even the score out.  ambridgeshire managed to get one more frame before Suffolk raised their game and took six frames in a row ending the session with an 8-3 score line.  The second session was extremely close.  Wins alternated and Suffolk just took the session 6-5.  There was a change in the third session with Suffolk losing the session 6-5.  The team was determined not to lose and clinched the final session 6-5.  A good performance with the match ending in a 25-19 win for the Suffolk Ladies.  Special mention to Kim O'Brien for winning all four of her games.  Also to Vikki Layton, Clare Seaman, Jeanette Skardon, Leah Willett and Trudy Acton each winning 3 out of 4.

JUNIORS

The youth Team expected a touch game as both Suffolk and Cambridgeshire have had to rebuild their teams this season.  In the first session, Suffolk edged ahead 6-5.  As the second session progressed the Suffolk team was looking very strong leading at one point 11-6 only to be pegged back by a determined Cambridgeshire side who evened the score 11 frames all.  Suffolk took the third session 6-5 a very close match until Suffolk picked the pace up and took six frames in a row, eventually coming away with a 24-20 win.  Special mention to Leighton Mitchell for winning all four of his games.  Also to Nick Phipps, Dylan Thomas, and Tim Abbott for winning 3 frames each and substitute Adam Whyatt for winning 2 out of 2.

Next match will be away to Bedfordshire on 13 May.
