7 October 2001 - Suffolk v Bedfordshire

MEN’S A

The men's A team were currently leading the Region 4 tables, but this was no time to be complacent.  With three matches to go, they needed to continue with their dominance.  Bedfordshire were not going to make it easy, and after the first session Suffolk were trailing 4:7.  The second session was not much better with Suffolk taking just 5 of the 11 frames - now trailing 9:13.  Surely Suffolk needed to get their act together and put the situation right.

Session three:- No improvement! Suffolk could again only take 5 frames.  They now trailed 14:19.  Bedforshire only needed 4 more frames to win.  Things were looking dire for Suffolk.

Suffolk were not going to roll over.  Suddenly something clicked and they took the first three frames of the fourth session.  The score line now 17:19, Bedfordshire took the next frame, just three frames from victory.  Suffolk really dug in and took six of the last seven frames to finish the match winning 23:21.

With one point per frame and five for the overall win, this put Suffolk on 240 points.  Second place Norfolk had beaten Cambridgeshire 26:18 and had narrowed the gap to 24 points.

Excellent results from Alan Mower winning 4 out of 4, restoring him to equal first position in Region 4.  Good results also from J Huggins, M Keeble, P Cullingford and S Bemment, each winning 3 out of 4.

MEN’S B

Suffolk B really needed to beat Bedfordshire in an effort to take second place in the region and mount a challenge for first.  It was not a good start with Suffolk taking just 3 of the first 11 frames.  The second session was not much better and Suffolk now trailed 8:14.  Suffolk started to rally a little and took the third session 7:4.  The score line was now 15:18.  Could this be the come back that Suffolk needed?

In the fourth session Suffolk put up a valiant effort and took 6 frames to Bedfordshire's 5.  Not enough to win, but they did manage a respectable 21:23.  A lot better than it might have been!

Excellent results from N Twomey and R Smith, each winning 4 out of 4.  Well done also to G Flatt and P Dyer who also managed 3 out of 4.

LADIES

Suffolk Ladies have had an excellent season so far and are currently top of the league tables, but with Bedfordshire in second place, only 23 point behind, the Suffolk team could not afford to loose.  Suffolk started the match brilliantly only dropping three frames in the first session to take the lead eight frames to three.  The second session was very similar as Suffolk kept their form taking the session seven frames to four.  With the match still not secured for Suffolk they had to stay focused.  In the next two sessions the frames were shared fairly evenly with Suffolk ending the match with a 27-17 win.

Excellent performances saw C Seaman and V Layton winning four out of four frames, while K O'Brien, T Acton, J Skardon and D Green played well, each winning three out of four.

JUNIORS

Suffolk Youths were hoping for a better result today.  After a very close first session Bedfordshire started to assert their authority to lead by 13 frames to 9.  Suffolk despite a gallant effort could not keep the pace going.  By the end of the third session they were loosing by 21 frames to 12.  In the end Bedfordshire powered through to win by 29 frames to 15.

More work needed by the Suffolk Youths who face an even harder match next month against Essex the current regional champions.
