6 April 2003 - Suffolk v Bedfordshire

MEN’S A

Suffolk A team were currently one point behind Regional leaders Essex and with potentially another hard match, the team had to get a good result against Bedfordshire A.

The first session went well with Bedfordshire A only taking four of the possible eleven frames. A performance which Suffolk went on to repeat in the second and third sessions going into the fourth session leading 21-12.

Bedfordshire appeared totally demoralised and were only able to take two more frames bringing the final score to Suffolk A winning 30 frames to Bedfordshire's 14.

Elsewhere in the Region, Cambridgeshire had beaten Hertfordshire 28-16, but this was still not enough to stop Suffolk taking the Regional lead with 65 points to Cambridgeshire's 62. Previous leaders Essex had drawn against Norfolk, placing Essex third on 55 points.

Superb performances from Alan Mower, Steve Kane and Michael Puntschart each winning 4 out of 4 and Steve Lish, Phil Cullingford, Sean Whelan and Ned Acton each winning 3 out of 4.

MEN’S B

After last month's narrow defeat against Norfolk, Suffolk B could do with a good win to bring them back into contention for the Regional title.

After a bad start in the first session going one frame behind, Suffolk B pulled back in the second session to draw the score level at 11 frames each.  At the start of the third session, the lead alternated between Suffolk and Bedfordshire, but then Bedfordshire suddenly put on a spurt taking six frames on the trot to lead 19-15.  Suffolk really needed to dig in. The players excelled themselves only allowing Bedfordshire two more frames to finish the score with Suffolk B winning 23 frames to 21.

Elsewhere in the Region Essex and Norfolk drew which puts them both only marginally ahead of Suffolk on 49 points.  However, Cambridgeshire beat Hertfordshire 28-16 to take the Regional lead on 66 points.  With the next match against Cambridgeshire, Suffolk will have to pull out all the stops to put them in a strong position to take the title.

Best results were from Richard Mann, Paul Slinger and Stephen Kempton.

NEXT MATCH - 18 May, away to Cambridgeshire
